Each November there is a guided hike in Altona Forest – all about recognizing and identifying trees by their bark, buds, and growing patterns. One resident tree we discuss is the native witch hazel. With graceful spreading branches, it has a vase-shape and is attractive – but we’d just missed her late-fall show. I promised myself that I’d go looking for this small tree’s display this year in mid-October, since my timing is off every year!
Witch hazel is commonly known for it’s medicinal qualities as an astringent, treating insect bites, sunburn, blemishes and other skin inflammation, and it’s historical use as a water divining rod.
However to gardeners and naturalists, witch hazel’s qualities are about it’s spicy scent and it’s blooms… at a time when you’d never expect to see anything blooming. Native witch hazel – sometimes called ‘winterbloom’ – is Hamamelis virginiana. It blooms in fall –…

Throughout those eight years, I had given my therapist many, many things that I had saved from my childhood. Some of the items were pictures, a baggie of dirt, rocks, pieces of jewelry, gifts that identified places I had been, and a wooden baseball bat.
I saved all these things because I thought they were proof of what happened to me. I thought they were my smoking guns. My therapist described them as my breadcrumbs. He believed I unconsciously (and consciously) kept these mementos to help lead me back to my repressed…

A vision has its correspondence. Getting it into so many things in life. It can be more like a vision shall see it in order to consider it. That certain vision can be imaged in a work of creativity. Creativity can build some trust around at a perfect imagination. Visualize something a great deal more into empowerment.
There’s some beautiful vision that can polish through. Feeling like a work of artistic creation. True beauty can feel more like a picture perfect scene. A vision of that work of beauty will brighten up that very special moment. A very particular moment can work its magic.

I sometimes talk about my ‘Jeanette universe’. This is the world I want to live in. It often exists within my mind and also in physical space at my home, the wonderful Whimsy Manor. I want to share my world with you because it is an affirming place. This is also a bit activist-y, in my own rather gentle way, because my universe and the actual world are very different.
So, in my universe:
- There is no bullying or abuse. No sexual or family or other kinds of violence, no discrimination on the basis of any characteristic and no prejudice
- Autism isn’t ever seen as needing to be ‘cured’. In fact neurodiversity is the accepted way of being
- Nobody needs to ‘mask’ – people are valued for being their own unique them
- People are respected for their skills and experience regardless of background, ability or any other characteristic

Many of us are living our lives repeating the same heartbreaking and unhealthy patterns. We appear to be stuck on replay unable to move forward while continually duplicating the chaos that caused us to leave our last relationship. Perhaps there is a belief that we have a “type” that we attract. We seem to get involved emotionally with the same type of person that inevitably turns out to be Mr. or Mrs. Wrong.
Looking at our past, we may realize that we are often at the center of a chaotic or unhealthy situation. Our belief may be that these situations keep happening to us. But, perhaps the real truth is that we are helping to create these situations by planting the seed of the behavior and nourishing its growth. Our subconscious beliefs about ourselves and the world…
